Owning a business can be an isolating experience. Business owners are singularly responsible for the enterprise's success and continuity. They are charged with moving the enterprise forward while having to balance the demands of its various stakeholders. Ironically, owners often find themselves working for their employees and not the other way around. And, while surrounded by a legion of employees, service providers, and family members, none has the business owner's total responsibility.
Privately held businesses, partnerships, and family enterprises often take on the unique traits of their owners and stakeholders. They frequently do not lend themselves to traditional classic organizational structures or consulting interventions. Relationships and business problems tend to be more complex due to history, ownership structures, and personality preferences. The reality is, many can develop procedures and organizational structures. The issue is how to make effective changes within the limits of the enterprise's unique culture, structure, personnel, values, and ways of thinking.
